Little History

introduction of the MOOC

After a video conference with Mohamed Bachounda January 4, 2018, about our plans for the year 2018. An idea was born, it was to create a MOOC in Arabic.

The 10 days that followed the discussion, we created a videos list with a 1-month timeline, and so I started to draw the MOOC logo, to make a landing-page and the project on Wikipedia Arabic. While Mohamed created our course page on the platform t3ellem.com we chose. The film company Dreamart Pictures, then directed by Zakaria Mimouni, makes all of our videos of the MOOC, starting with the video advertising, which we launch on Youtube and Facebook and which has made several thousand watches, and finishing with the courses. I was the intermediary between Dreamart and the courses written by our group. I check the content that was talked by the presenters ... ex.

On April 20, 2018 in Berlin I made a presentation of the project to share my experience with the affiliations that were present.

Structure of the MOOC

The structure of our MOOC is very similar to the MOOC in French, which we took as an example and point of departure, but we adapted it to Wikipedia in Arabic. The MOOC contains 21 lessons in video and text. At the end of each week the registered pass a test. At the 5th week we did a final test. All participants who have finished the test will have an electronic diploma or paper by choice. The courses of the MOOC will still be viewable even after the end of the period that we have defined, but without having the diploma at the end of the courses.

The records that surprised us

The MOOC members are between 10 and 68 years old, more than half are between 20 and 28, who come from 73 countries. The largest number of registrants are from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Algeria, Syria and Iraq. The least active countries on Wikimedia projects that surprised us, by number of participants are Sudan with 320 registered, and Mauritania with 41 registered. The number of registrants is close to 10000 people.

What did not work well

Our MOOC is basically free, that's why we found difficulties in the creation of professional videos. Many of the presenters wanted to get paid too much. And what agreed to do the MOOC with us, forced us to put in their schedule, that's why we could not respect the timeline.

Conclusion

The team had a good experience in creating this MOOC. Now we know how to do it quickly, and more professional. The fact that we did not ask for a grant really bothered us. And we will make a second version in 2019 to rework some mistakes, and we can help other languages or affiliation to make their MOOC too.
